Welcome to Food Allergy Living

Hello everyone and welcome to Food Allergy Living. My name is Cindy and I am the mother to an 8 year old daughter who has multiple food allergies. This site was created to hopefully help others be able to find a resource to help them with the journey of living with food allergies. I call it a journey because it is a lifestyle change that most people will have to deal with the rest of their lives. Although some might outgrow the food allergies, many of us and our children will continue to have to be aware of their food for the remainder of their lives. Although it does sound bad when put in those words, this is something that we are able to test for, and then work to eliminate the foods so that our children can live a healthy, normal life. Once again, normal in the aspect of awareness and always having the epipen and Benadryl available.

Immunotherapy Could Desensitize Peanut Allergy?

There are two kinds of food allergy parents. The ones that avoid any and all contact with the allergen - in this case peanut, and the ones that believe that small amounts of the allergen can desensitize their child to the allergen. We have been steadfastly in the first group - ever vigilant we avoid any and all possible contact with peanut for our food (and in particular) peanut allergic daughter. We have no peanut in our home - period. You might say we are a zero-tolerance family when it comes to peanut.

The quest for Soy Free Bread

My daughter has decided she wants bread. Before we found out about the addition of Soy to her Food Allergies, she ate more bread than any of us. She has not had any bread or crackers in over a month, and now she is ready for me to find some. I spent about 30 minutes in the Grocery store tonight, and came home empty, however I did bring home the ingredients to make homemade bread. I would love suggestions on recipies for dairy free, soy free, nut free and seaseme free bread. I will let you know how my first one turns out, it is rising as I type.

Yearly Allergy Tests

In the last couple of weeks I have taken my daughter to her well visit checkup and mentioned to the doctor that I needed to have her go to the allergist to be tested. They decided to do the Blood test on her to test for allergies at the doctor’s office. I went ahead and allowed them to test, I had always wanted to have her tested this way, but her previous allergist did not like this test. Well her test was positive for just about everything.

Children and Food Allergies issues and attending School

Having a young daughter with food allergies, we have had this issue in the past and I am sure will have it again in the future. I know that many schools are aware of food allergies and some take the steps that make parents comfortable to send their children to school. I think it is wonderful that many parents have found schools that are able to handle this issue, but I am sure others have not been so lucky.
